Planning comes before selecting a treatment

Your assessment

Planning comes before selecting a treatment

Smile design brings your oral health, facial features and goals into a treatment discussion. It can involve different approaches and does not mean everyone needs veneers.

Photography and digital scanning help the team discuss shape and proportion with you. These records support, rather than replace, an examination of teeth, gums and bite.

It depends on your case

What does a smile design include? It depends on what your assessment shows

Smile design is not a treatment: it is the planning that decides which combination you need. It may come down to whitening alone, composite on a few teeth, aligners before any veneers, or 4 to 20 veneers or crowns. The diagnosis of your teeth, gums and bite decides it, and you try it in your mouth with a mock-up before a single tooth is touched.

Cavities or inflamed gumsTreat them first. Nothing cosmetic is placed on diseased teeth or gums.
Crowded, rotated or protruding teethAligners or orthodontics before veneers, or instead of them. With the tooth in its proper position, less tooth structure is removed, or none, and veneers bonded to enamel fail much less often than veneers bonded to dentin.
An even yellowish color and a shape you likeWhitening. It may be all you need.
You want lighter teeth and also veneers or crownsWhiten first and choose the shade of the restorations afterward: composite, veneers and crowns do not get lighter.
Chips, small gaps or an irregular shape on a few teethComposite without removing tooth structure, or 1 to 2 veneers.
A change of shape and color across the whole smileVeneers. How many depends on how many teeth show when you smile: 4 to 10 per arch.
A lot of gum shows when you smileFirst understand the cause (gum, bone, lip or tooth position) before lengthening teeth with veneers.
You clench or grind your teethCheck the bite first: it changes the material and the design, and a night guard is added.
Missing teethAn implant, bridge or denture, planned together with the rest of the smile.
A tooth that turned dark after a root canalInternal bleaching, a veneer or a crown, depending on how much tooth is left.

General criteria from the clinical literature (sources below). They do not replace an assessment: your plan comes from the diagnosis of your own case.

Is it right for me?

Who it usually makes sense for, and what is treated first

It usually makes sense if…

  • You want to change the shape, size, proportion or color of several teeth and see the possible result before deciding.
  • Your case combines treatments (for example, aligners and then composite, or gum treatment and then veneers) and the order matters.
  • Some teeth will need to be reshaped: planning from the final shape helps preserve enamel.

Addressed before you start…

  • Cavities and gum disease: treated first.
  • Clenching or grinding (bruxism) and bite problems: they change the material and the design.
  • Old restorations that leak or are stained: checked and replaced if needed.
  • Your expectations: a clear conversation about what can and cannot be achieved. The on-screen simulation is a guide, not a promise.

What to discuss

A plan you can understand

01

Your priorities

Describe what you want to improve and what you want to keep. Reference photographs start a conversation without determining treatment.

02

Options with a purpose

Ask what each approach aims to address and which limitations may apply to you.

03

A written plan

Confirm the stages, costs, consent and follow-up arrangements before proceeding.

The process

How it is done, step by step

  1. 1

    Clinical assessment1 to 2 appointments

Medical and dental history, an exam of your teeth, gums and bite, X-rays if needed, a dental chart and a periodontal chart (Mexico's NOM-013 standard requires them as part of the minimum clinical record). At Gloss Dent the first consultation lasts about 90 minutes.

  2. 2

    Records of your smile

Photos, video and a 3D scan, almost always in the same appointment.

  3. 3

Digital proposaldays to a few weeks

The proposed shape is designed around your face, your lips and your gums.

  4. 4

    Mock-up in your mouth1 appointment

A resin model placed over your teeth, without reshaping them, so you can see yourself, give your opinion and have it adjusted.

  5. 5

    Written plan and consent

A plan in phases with alternatives (including doing less), risks, and what cannot be undone.

  6. 6

    Foundation treatmentsdepending on the case

Gums, cavities, aligners (months) or whitening.

  7. 7

    Final cosmetic treatments

Composite, veneers or crowns, according to the plan.

  8. 8

    Maintenance

Regular checkups, and a night guard if you clench your teeth.

Common questions

Before you decide

How many veneers do I need for a smile design?

It depends. Possibly none: sometimes whitening, composite or aligners are enough. If you do need them, the number comes from how many teeth show when you smile and what you want to change. The average smile shows the 6 front teeth and the premolars, which is why plans range from 4 or 6 to 8 or 10 per arch, and reach 20 when both arches show and the change is across the whole smile.

Does the digital design guarantee how my smile will turn out?

No. It is a guide for making a decision. The result depends on your gums, your underlying tooth color, your bite and the material; that is why it is tested with a mock-up in your mouth before the final work.

Do I need orthodontics first?

If your teeth are crowded, rotated or protruding, often yes: with the tooth in its proper position, less tooth structure is removed, or none. If only the color or small details of shape are changing, no.

How long does it take?

It depends on what the plan includes. A plan with whitening and composite can be completed in weeks. One with veneers usually takes 3 to 5 appointments over 3 to 6 weeks after the assessment. If aligners come first, add months.

How can I tell whether a clinic diagnoses properly?

It should check for cavities, gum health and your bite before talking about aesthetics; show you a mock-up in your mouth before removing any tooth structure; and give you the plan in writing, with alternatives and risks. You should also be able to look up the professional license of whoever treats you at gob.mx/cedulaprofesional, Mexico's public registry of professional licenses.
