Your assessment
Orthodontics changes tooth position and may address how the bite fits together. A small visible concern does not always mean a short course of treatment.
Appliance choice, scope and duration require assessment. Discuss your goals and availability with an explanation of the limitations before deciding.
It depends on your case
No method has been solidly shown to shorten a complete orthodontic treatment: not vibration, not lasers, not switching aligners more often. What can be shorter is a limited-scope plan that only aligns the teeth that show. It is a valid option if you know from the start what it corrects and what it does not.
| If in your case… | Usually considered… |
|---|---|
| Only your front teeth bother you and your bite is fine | A limited-scope plan may be shorter. Ask in writing what will not be corrected. |
| There are bite problems (crossbite, deep bite, teeth sitting far forward) | Complete treatment: correcting only what shows can leave the bite unchanged. |
| You are offered vibration | It did not shorten treatment in the 2023 Cochrane review, not even with aligners. |
| You are offered low-level laser or light | Somewhat faster in specific phases, with no proven benefit for the complete treatment. |
| You are offered minor surgery (corticotomy, piezocision) | Teeth move faster at first, but total treatment time has hardly been measured, and it hurts more during the first few days. |
| You are told to switch aligners every 3 days | In one trial it did not shorten treatment and required more refinements. |
General criteria from the clinical literature (sources below). They do not replace an assessment: your plan comes from the diagnosis of your own case.
What to discuss
Clarify whether the proposal addresses a localized concern or a wider bite problem.
Complexity, biological response and attendance can influence duration.
Hygiene and reviews are part of care. Retainers should be considered when planning the stage after active treatment.
Common questions
About 20 months on average. It depends on how complex the case is.
Not necessarily. If your case only needs the teeth that show to be aligned, a limited plan may be enough. What matters is that you are told what it does not correct and how it was decided that it is right for you.
Who is responsible for your case; whether you will have X-rays, photos and a scan; which movements in your plan are the least predictable; what retention you will need; and, if you are offered faster treatment, what evidence there is that it shortens the complete treatment.
The criteria and figures on this page come from these sources. They are averages from studies, not a promise for any individual case.
