Your assessment

Health and aesthetics in the same conversation

Aesthetic dentistry offers ways to change aspects of dental appearance. An informed choice also considers teeth, gums, bite and ongoing maintenance.

At Gloss Dent, each proposal aims to address a specific need and your preferences. Explore smile design, veneers and alignment options without assuming which is appropriate before assessment.

It depends on what you want to change

Whitening, composite, a veneer or a crown? It depends on what bothers you

What usually makes sense is the least invasive option that fixes what bothers you. Even color: whitening. Details on a few teeth: composite. Shape and color of the whole smile: veneers. A badly damaged or weak tooth: a crown or an onlay. Crooked teeth: aligners first.

Yellowish teeth with an even shadeWhitening: in the office, one visit of 1 to 2 hours, or at home with trays, over 2 to 6 weeks. It lasts around 3 years according to the NHS; it is not permanent.
A gray tone or stains from medications (tetracycline)Whitening does little or takes months; sometimes a veneer makes more sense.
A chip, a small gap or the shape of a few teethComposite, without removing tooth structure. At 10 years, between 90% and 95% success, depending on the type of restoration.
The shape and color of your whole smileVeneers; how many depends on how many teeth show when you smile.
A healthy tooth whose only problem is color or shape on the frontA veneer or composite, not a crown: a crown removes between 63% and 72% of the tooth; a veneer, between 3% and 30%.
A heavily restored, fractured or weak toothA crown. If healthy tooth structure is still left, an onlay preserves more: 91% were still in place at 10 years.
You already have crowns or composite on your front teethWhiten first and replace them afterward: they do not get lighter.
A back tooth that has had a root canalThe cusps are often covered with an onlay or a crown; Cochrane cautions that the evidence for choosing between them is limited.

General criteria from the clinical literature (sources below). They do not replace an assessment: your plan comes from the diagnosis of your own case.

Before choosing

What is checked before any cosmetic treatment

It usually makes sense if…

  • You want a change that preserves your natural tooth as much as possible.
  • The color, a chip, a gap or the shape of some teeth bothers you.
  • You have old restorations that look different from the rest.

Addressed or ruled out first…

  • Cavities, gums and bite: checked and treated first.
  • Whitening: not recommended for people under 18, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • If you clench or grind your teeth, the material changes and a guard is needed.
  • Crowns, veneers and composite do not change color: if you are going to whiten, you whiten first.

Common questions

Whitening, composite and crowns

How long does whitening last?

According to the NHS, around 3 years if you follow the instructions. Coffee, tea, wine and tobacco stain the teeth again. It is not permanent.

Does whitening cause sensitivity?

At first, for many people, yes: the ADA reports temporary sensitivity in up to two-thirds of patients. The risk is similar at home and in the office, and at home it tends to be milder.

Does a laser or a light whiten more?

Scientific reviews did not find that light or lasers improve the result or change sensitivity.

Crown or veneer?

If the tooth is healthy and the problem is color or shape on the front, a veneer or composite, because they preserve much more of the tooth. A crown is reserved for heavily restored, fractured or weak teeth.

Can I get composite or veneers right after whitening?

It is best to wait: whitening reduces immediate bonding to enamel. How long is decided at your assessment, based on your case.
