Digital smile design: what should happen before treatment
Gloss Dent editorial team ·
Smile design is a planning process, not the name of a restoration. It can organize a conversation about shape, proportion and shade. Whether to proceed still depends on an assessment of oral health and function. An appealing image is a reference for discussion, not proof that a treatment is suitable or that an identical outcome will follow.
Start with your priorities
Write down what you want to change and what you like about your current smile. You may want to explore a particular edge or asymmetry while keeping the overall character of your teeth. You can also attend a consultation simply to understand your options.
Gloss Dent’s planning approach includes photography and digital scanning. Ask which records would be used in your case and what each contributes. A useful explanation connects the technology to a decision rather than presenting a scan as an answer on its own.
Different concerns may need different approaches
Tooth position, tooth color and tooth shape are separate considerations. Orthodontics moves teeth; whitening addresses certain color concerns. They serve different purposes and require an assessment. The NHS overview of orthodontics and ADA whitening guidance explain those distinctions.
Ask the dentist to describe the purpose of each option, what it would involve and why it might not suit you. It is also reasonable to ask about postponing an elective change.
Read a digital proposal as a conversation
When looking at a simulation, go beyond the shade. Discuss the proposed edges, proportions and how much tooth you would like to show when smiling. Describe what you notice in your own words, even if you do not know a dental term.
Useful questions include:
- Which parts show an aesthetic intention, and what still needs clinical checking?
- What changes are proposed for each tooth?
- Would there be a clinical trial stage before final restorations?
- How will my feedback and agreed revisions be recorded?
- What limitations should we understand before proceeding?
A simulation cannot guarantee the final result. Its value is in helping you and the team discuss choices more clearly.
Ask for a written plan
Before authorizing treatment, request the order of the proposed stages, an appointment estimate for your case, a clear quote and follow-up arrangements. If more than one professional is involved, confirm who will coordinate the plan and answer your questions. Keep a copy of the version you approve.
For an international visit, discuss travel dates after the clinical sequence has been considered. A proposed image cannot determine how many trips you will need.
Explore smile design at Gloss Dent and arrange a consultation to review your own records. The aim is to understand the proposal well enough to make an informed choice.
