Invisalign candidacy: assessment, appointments and retention
Gloss Dent editorial team ·
Invisalign is a brand of clear aligners. Whether it could suit you depends on an assessment of tooth position, bite and oral health, together with your goals. A photograph or online form can start a conversation but cannot replace that assessment.
What clear aligners can do
Aligners are removable appliances that guide planned tooth movement through a sequence of trays. They do not suit every alignment problem and require professional supervision. The FDA’s clear aligner guidance describes how they work and their limitations.
Ask what the treatment would aim to move, which limitations apply and what alternatives deserve consideration. Is the proposal intended to address a localized concern or a wider bite problem? The brand name does not answer those questions by itself.
Consider the daily routine
A removable appliance comes with everyday responsibilities. Discuss work, meals, travel and your availability for reviews before starting. Request instructions for wearing and cleaning your own aligners, including what to do if one is damaged or lost.
Describe the routine you actually have. That gives you a better chance of identifying the organization needed to follow the plan. Ask how to report a fit problem between visits and when an in-person assessment would be necessary.
Understand the course before authorizing it
The treating professional selects the necessary records, develops a proposal and discusses its scope with you. Reviews during treatment allow progress to be checked and adjustments considered. Do not move ahead through trays or change the schedule on your own.
Use these questions in your consultation:
- Which movements are proposed and why?
- What timetable is estimated for my case, and what could change it?
- Which appointments need to be in person?
- How are additional aligners or changes to the plan handled and priced?
- What should I do if an aligner no longer fits or goes missing?
Ask for answers that relate to your own plan, rather than relying on a promotional treatment length. If you travel frequently, review that practical limitation before committing.
Include retention in the plan
After active treatment, retainers help maintain the new tooth positions. Leeds Teaching Hospitals explains the risk of movement without retention and the importance of oral hygiene during orthodontic care in its benefits and risks guide.
Discuss the retainer type, wear instructions, review schedule and replacement costs. If you expect to move away or return to another country, agree how care will continue before that happens.
